WSYA aims to provide a wide-reaching platform for youth-led ICT projects. The WSYA categories encompass media, political participation, culture, multilingualism, indigenous knowledge and a range of development issues. Projects may be submitted in the following three categories, each of which will have a winner and two finalists who will attend the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia (November 16-18, 2005).

1) Development

  • Rewards the best online platform for youth centred around issues of poverty reduction, environmental sustainability, social justice, healthcare or peace
  • This category focuses on how technology can be used to achieve the UN Millenium Development Goals
  • Examples include online platforms around social justice or peace, new tech-driven environmental projects, e-health and e-learning initiatives as well as innovative uses of technology for employment and entrepreneurship

2) Creativity and Culture

  • Celebrates the most innovative online platform highlighting young people’s potential for producing creative content, promoting multilingualism, creating new contemporary forms of culture and preserving indigenous knowledge and/or traditional culture
  • This category focuses on creative expression, e-content creation and cultural/linguistic diversity in the information society
  • Examples include online art galleries, e-music production, creative writing, local and indigenous content development, projects supporting multilingualism on the web and online communities of young artists

3) Community Engagement

  • Showcases the most influential and engaging online platform facilitating young people’s participation in global, national or local decision-making processes and sharing news/ideas to empower youth and build community
  • This category focuses on empowering marginalized youth to become more active citizens and strengthen their voice in the political, economic and social decision-making processes
  • Examples include blogs, online magazines, discussion forums, online activist communities, e-democracy initiatives and knowledge sharing around media, opinions and new technologies
