The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) is a project of the World Summit Award network and organised by the International Center for New Media (ICNM) as part of its activities within the United Nations Global Alliance for ICT and Development.
The WSYA was held first in 2005 as an international competition for youth-led projects in e-Content and innovative applications that encouraged the active participation of young people in the emerging Information Society. It was sponsored by the Internet Society, Siemens AG, and Logitech and operated under the patronage of Vivienne Reding, European Commissioner for the Information Society and Media. From over 300 applicants hailing from 70+ countries, the top three projects in each WSYA 2005 category – Development, Creativity & Culture, and Community Engagement – took centre stage at the Gala Events in Tunis in November 2005.
Its second edition was held in the period of 2008-2009 as a follow-up activity of the World Summit on Information Society and its action plan towards the year 2015. The finalists and category winners were invited to the WSA Events in September 2009 in Monterrey, Mexico. The contest was organised in partnership with the Cyber Peace Initiative (CPI) launched by the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement in 2007. The CPI has a mission to empower youth of any nation, through ICT, to become catalysts of change, to create safe and better futures for themselves and others, to address the root causes of conflict, to disseminate the culture of peace, and to create international dialogues for a harmonious world. Founding partners of CPI are The Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the International Telecommunication Union, the Global Alliance for ICT and Development, Microsoft, Cisco, and Intel. WSYA 2009 was also supported by the Internet Society (ISOC).
