MEXICAN E-MAGAZINE
JOIN
: Working for an Informed Youth that can create Change

By Ana Bertha Escandon
Change starts with collective conviction, and conviction is originated from shared ideas. In 2007, a group of Mexican youngsters took this statement to the test and created JOIN – Jóvenes Informados, an e-magazine dedicated citizen journalism that enables young people to share ideas about the issues that affect Mexico. What started as an ideal of 4 youngsters, now is a well known weekly publication with a reach of 10,000 youngsters and a staff of 24 volunteers throughout all the country.
JOIN is a branch of Consenso Uno A.C., a local NGO that thrives to empower youth for the positive transformation of Mexico. JOIN contributes to this mission by helping young Mexicans to be informed in order to analyze and create an opinion about public issues of their country. JOIN members share the belief that due to the apathy in the democratic life of Mexico, the first step towards the development of active citizens in the country’s political activity is to form a well informed youth. And for that, Internet was the best platform to spread the effort.
In order to be truly a youngster initiative, the e-magazine was designed to address different types of expression near to young people’s interests: intellectual, artistic and activist. In the intellectual dimension, Mexican youngsters can write, read and comment journalistic-type articles concerning several topics, such as politics, economy, environment and healthy living. For the artistic type, the magazine has a special section called “Urban Coolture” that people can use to write, discuss and share all kinds of art. And for the activists, JOIN has an open electronic calendar that gives people the possibility of inviting other youngsters to their activities. This way, everybody has a chance of sharing their ideas in the form that they believe to be more comfortable.
JOIN is the first portal in Mexico that formalizes what many have started through blogs. The need of expressing and sharing ideas has been growing in Mexico, but the reach of previous efforts was limited to the participation of only a few. That is why JOIN members work every day to create a unified voice for the country’s improvement, inviting young people to unite, express and achieve change.
JOIN – Jóvenes Informados. Unite, express, change.
